Dog kennels
We wanted to create one of the most modern kennels possible, with the dogs’ comfort and wellbeing at the center of every decision. Each kennel space is 24 square meters almost double the size required by Finnish law so the dogs have plenty of room to move and play. Normally, two dogs share one kennel, but there are exceptions: some dogs prefer living alone, and we always make sure to arrange companions carefully so that every dog feels comfortable with its partner.
Every dog has its own insulated wooden house. The walls, floor, and ceiling are fully insulated, and the size is carefully designed so the dog can sleep comfortably inside, while still being small enough to retain warmth with its own body heat. Each house has a little extension at the entrance to block the wind, and soft straw bedding that provides extra comfort and warmth in winter. The roofs can be lifted up, making cleaning and maintenance easy. Each kennel is also roofed, giving the dogs shelter from rain, snow, and direct sunlight, ensuring they always have a dry and protected place to rest.
The feeding system is designed to be both hygienic and practical. Food bowls are placed in holders outside the kennel, and the dogs eat through the front opening. This keeps the bowls clean, makes them easy to wash, and allows us to monitor feeding closely making sure every dog eats its own portion. It also makes collecting and cleaning the bowls quick and efficient.

Dog kitchen 1
Our huskies are professional athletes, so quality nutrition is essential. They require a diet that matches their active lifestyle. Considering the physical activity, our huskies have a higher calorie consumption than your average pup. On average, a working sled dog may need anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000 calories per day!

Generally, working huskies require a high fat diet to support their energy levels, especially during physical activity and in the cold winter climate. Fats, like salmon oil, also contribute also to a healthy coat. Proteins are the building blocks of muscle, and our huskies thrive on a protein-rich diet. Carbohydrates provide energy for huskies, but they consume them in moderation to avoid unnecessary weight gain, that can lead to joint problems and more.

The huskies follow a structured feeding schedule to meet their energy requirements throughout the day. In the morning, they have soup of warm water mixed with raw meat, as their primary source of hydration during the day. Between tours, the dogs are given snacks of raw frozen meat along with water or soup to maintain energy levels and keep them hydrated. After their work, the dogs have a dinner of dry kibble mixed with meat and water. In colder temperatures, evening snacks are provided. Dogs with higher energy needs, particularly those with a leaner physique, have extra snacks throughout the day. Good food keeps them strong, fast, and ready to perform - because a well-fed dog is a happy, thriving athlete!

Dog walker / Running wheel
The dog walker, or also called a running wheel, is a tool that we use in the summer time. It is a specialised running machine that provides our dogs with light exercise to maintain their fitness levels during the warmer months, so that we do not have to start from scratch when we start training them in the autumn time.
The dog walker allows us to adjust speed and duration according to each dog’s needs, ensuring a suitable workout without risking overheating. In addition to physical fitness, this training provides mental stimulation for our dogs, particularly during the summer and outdoor activities may be limited.

Dressing Cabin
If you’ve booked a self-driven husky tour with us, this will be the first building that you will enter upon your arrival at our kennel.
The dressing cabin is exactly what the words imply - a large, cozy cabin in which we will provide you with overalls and boots, so that you can start your husky adventure dressed appropriately.
If necessary we also have woolen socks,
gloves and hats for your use. The dressing cabin also gives you space to store your belongings while out on the sled, as well as to buy some snacks to feed our dogs and for yourself. You can also buy yourself a souvenir to remember your experience by.

Gazik
Some dogs are easy to work with. They come into the kennel, figure out the routine, bond with people, run well in harness, and just get on with it. But others... others are more complicated. More guarded. More sensitive. And sometimes, it’s those dogs the difficult ones who end up teaching you the most. Gazik was one of those.
He didn’t bond with people. Not really. Most handlers couldn’t get close to him not emotionally, and not physically either. If you moved too quickly, raised your voice, or brought too much energy into his space, he’d just vanish. Shut down. Run away. And that’s the thing. For all the difficulty, Gazik loved to run. He ran like he was born for it. Fast, focused, powerful. He had drive like you wouldn’t believe. From the very beginning, he made it clear that being anywhere but up front wasn’t good enough. He wanted to lead. He needed to lead.
He was a phenomenal lead dog but you had to match his quiet, cautious pace. If you did that, you could whisper a command, and he would follow it with precision. But only if you stayed calm. Only if you earned it. He was never the easy one. But he taught a critical lesson: That managing dogs isn’t just about strength, commands, or routine. Sometimes it’s about you about calming down, letting go of expectations, and meeting a dog exactly where they are.

How it began
Our journey began in the early 2000s. I was working as a wilderness and sled dog guide, while Veronica was finishing her degree in tourism marketing. We shared a vision: to create something of our own, where guests could experience the thrill and beauty of traveling through Finland’s wilderness by dog team.
With little money, no backing from banks, and as foreign newcomers to Finland, we started small. Together with my parents, we bought an old farm in Eastern Finland. We built our first kennel there, but soon realized our biggest challenge: there simply weren’t enough winter tourists outside of Lapland. To make ends meet, we began working as subcontractors for larger kennels in the north during the Christmas season, while running our own multi-day cabin tours back south. Those tours were special—guests often left as lifelong friends, and we carry those memories with us still.
As our family grew, it became clear that the remote farmhouse wasn’t the right place to raise children, nor to build the kind of business we dreamed of. Gradually, we shifted more and more of our work to Lapland, eventually deciding to make it our permanent base. We struck out on our own, determined to create something that reflected our values: respect for the dogs, meaningful experiences for guests, and fair opportunities for our staff.
In 2016, after years of searching and setbacks, we found the land at Viiksjärvi. What began as a temporary solution quickly became home. The trails were perfect, the setting spectacular, and we finally had the opportunity to build our kennel from the ground up. With the support of financers who believed in our vision, Bearhill was born as you know it today. Since then, our kennel has grown, but our purpose remains the same: to share the unique power and joy of sled dogs with our guests, while caring for the animals, the people, and the community around us.

Kennel building
This building was also part of the three projects that we completed in the summer of 2024.
The kennel building benefits both our dogs as well as our staff. On the ground floor the main area features a large dog kitchen, where we can prepare the meals for the dogs exactly as they need it.
Next to the dog kitchen, it has plenty of storage space for dog food as well as a walk-in freezer. On the other side, there is a large room with special ventilation where we can hang equipment to dry overnight, so that everything is clean, dry, and warm to use for the next morning.
We use this for example for the dogs’ harnesses, jackets and booties. But
also for the customer blankets and reindeer hides.
The upstairs level of the building has
lockers for our staff as well as some office space.

Kosher's Passport
Occasionally, we buy dogs from other kennels, in order to ensure a varied gene pool within our breedings. Kosher was one of those dogs and he joined our kennel from Nic Petit’s yard
in Alaska back in 2018. After an impressive racing career, including running the Iditarod and the Kobuk 440, he came to our kennel for breeding purposes. Nowadays Kosher is slowly getting older and he does not work as much anymore. Initially, we intended for him to be rehomed as a pet dog, but we soon noticed that he is great with puppies. And so the decision was made to keep him in our kennel as a wise grandpa figure who our youngsters can learn a lot from.

Kota
“Kota” is the Finnish word for a tipi-like wooden hut. We have two of those at our kennel, where you as our guest can enjoy some juice and cookies by the fireplace after your husky ride.
During the season 2023/2024 our old kota burned down due to a chimney fire. No dogs, guests or staff were hurt, but unfortunately we could not save the building. Therefore, in the summer of 2024 a new kota was built and with it new improvements were made. The kota now displays the time as well as the temperature on the outside, it has a stone-wall fireplace on the inside and rustic, cozy furniture for our guests to relax on after their husky ride. Here you can enjoy a hot juice and some cookies, while you listen to the guide’s stories.

Lumi
Lumi wasn’t just any dog. She was a white-coated, blue-eyed female who, even as a young one, was different. From the start, she had a spark. An intelligence. A natural sense of leadership that you don’t often see, especially in such a young dog. By the time she was barely over a year old, she had already begun showing signs of wanting no, needing to lead.
One of Lumi’s most impressive skills was her ability to navigate in wide, open spaces something that’s extremely difficult for most sled dogs. Without a trail to follow, many dogs
get lost or wander. Not Lumi.
She would respond to commands even before uttering the words, lead a big team of dogs through difficult terrains in harsh weather conditions, and she would remember certain trails and turns even years later.
Lumi taught a priceless lesson that sled dogs are far more intelligent and intuitive than we give them credit for. If you take the time to notice it, nurture it, and let it grow, you can form a connection and a working bond that’s beyond anything you’d expect.

Mango
Mango was a dog who wasn’t flashy. He was a black-and-white dog, not particularly well-built or striking to look at, but he was solid. He kept his line tight, did his job, and never made a fuss. And over time, he proved himself to be one of the most reliable lead dogs. But his greatest strength? He never quit.
No matter the conditions, the job, the repetition, or the distance — Mango would go. He never got bored, never refused to work, never showed signs of checking out. His work ethic was unmatched.
He had this little pirouette that he would do every time the team stopped. A quick twist on the line. You had to let him do it, or he would get tangled. If you knew Mango, you let him spin and then carry on.

Musher cabin
For the 2022/2023 season we introduced a new type of tour at our main kennel at Viiksjärvi, so called musher-driven tours. This is a tour where the guests only sit in the sled and one of our professional guides drives the sled.
When we first introduced this new type of tour we had relatively rustic facilities at our starting chute, with a yurt and an outdoor toilet. But as these tours gained more popularity and became the third staple of our programs offered, we wanted to improve the facilities and at the same time improve the quality of experience that our guests would be getting.
Therefore, in the summer of 2024 we built a new cabin and titled it musher cabin. Inside, our guests have ample space to warm up, enjoy their juice and cookies and the ride and listen to the guide’s stories. It also gives space to get dressed (for those tours where clothing is included) and to store one’s belongings while out on the sled.

Musher lanssi
During the 2022/2023 season we introduced so-called musher-driven tours for the first time. On this type of tour guests get to just sit back in the sled, relax, and enjoy the ride, while one of our professional guides drives the sled for them.
While you ride, the musher will often introduce you to the team — pointing out the lead dogs, explaining the structure, and sharing little insights about the personalities pulling your sled. When a professional musher is driving, they can train the team as they go. It's not just a ride; it’s a window into the world of working sled dogs.
Some benefits for these types of tours is the lower physical demand, which also means that guests of any age can participate. The team that pulls the sled is generally bigger and, thus, has more power. It is quite impressive watching a team of 12-14 dogs work together as a team.
You can focus on watching the dogs, taking videos or photos as memories or you can just enjoy the scenery. Additionally, the ride is smooth, as you are in the safe hands of a professional.

RePaw Wall of fame
This wall full of name signs pays tribute to all those dogs who have retired or have been rehomed. Our dogs work hard and selflessly, they bring joy to so many of our guests and they deserve a comfortable retirement.
Once they are finished working with us it is our responsibility to find them a good home and that they will thrive in an environment outside of
our kennel. The reasons why we rehome dogs are varied. The most common reason is simply old age.
After our dogs have finished their career as a working dog, they deserve to spend their remaining years as retirees. Other reasons might include the dog’s characteristics or physical limitations. For example, some dogs do not like strangers and are very shy around new people, then in this case they are not suitable for work with tourists and we may rehome them to a smaller kennel or recreational team. If a dog has had an injury or an illness that will prevent them from continuing as a working dog, then we will also find them a home where they can live the remainder of their life as a pet dog.

Treatment room
Our treatment room is exactly what the name suggests, a space where we are able to give our dogs the basic medical treatment that they need. For example, if a dog gets injured we can do small wound care ourselves and we can administer medication. We still work very closely with our local vet for any major medical needs, of course, but this room allows us the opportunity to respond quickly and treat the small things ourselves.
The room is equipped with storage space, a fridge for medication that needs to be stored in a cool place, basic veterinary tools, a scale, as well as a treatment table. There is a separate inside space for our huskies who are in recovery, which gives them the peace and quiet to do so. Just outside there are also two outdoor fences where we can give our patients the opportunity to do their business and enjoy some fresh air under our watchful eye.
This room is also a great space for performing routine tasks such as deworming, teeth checking, weighing each dog, and performing the body condition scoring. Body scoring helps us adapt the dogs’ diets to their changing needs. It is a method used to assess a dog's body fat and overall physical condition. It's a visual and tactile evaluation, which helps determine if a dog is underweight, at an ideal weight, or overweight. It can be a valuable tool for monitoring health and preventing weight related issues. Our annual vet days are also made more convenient and efficient by having this facility. Once a year our local vet comes to our kennel for 2-3 days, during which we update vaccinations for all dogs, and the vet performs teeth cleanings as well as castrations. During those days the vet room is in constant use.

Cages and doghouses
We wanted to create one of the most modern kennels possible, with the dogs’ comfort and
wellbeing at the center of every decision. Each kennel space is 24 square meters—almost
double the size required by Finnish law—so the dogs have plenty of room to move and play.
Normally, two dogs share one kennel, but there are exceptions: some dogs prefer living
alone, and we always make sure to arrange companions carefully so that every dog feels
comfortable with its partner.
Every dog has its own insulated wooden house. The walls, floor, and ceiling are fully
insulated, and the size is carefully designed so the dog can sleep comfortably inside, while
still being small enough to retain warmth with its own body heat. Each house has a little
extension at the entrance to block the wind, and soft straw bedding that provides extra
comfort and warmth in winter. The roofs can be lifted up, making cleaning and maintenance
easy. Each kennel is also roofed, giving the dogs shelter from rain, snow, and direct sunlight,
ensuring they always have a dry and protected place to rest.
The feeding system is designed to be both hygienic and practical. Food bowls are placed in
